THE JOURNEY

“WE CAME TOGETHER TO CREATE SOMETHING SPECIAL. SOMETHING OPEN AND ACCEPTING. SOMETHING UNIQUE IN ITS APPROACH THAT CHANGES HOW WE PERCEIVE AND DEFINE BEAUTY. AND THAT SOMETHING BECAME GIRLBOYBEAUTY.”

Though Kim and Robert come from different backgrounds, they both struggled with how they perceived themselves and how they fit into the “beauty” spectrum.

Robert was instrumental in teaching Kim the basics of makeup artistry, giving her the confidence to experiment and enhance her features in ways that she once felt were outside of her abilities. In turn, Kim helped Robert overcome facial hair concerns by getting him started on his laser hair removal journey at her local aesthetics company. The more they helped each other achieve their best, the more they felt compelled to share their passion for beauty with others.

This led to GirlBoyBeauty: a gender-free makeup company designed for anyone who has ever aspired to break free of societal “beauty” concepts and embrace their own individuality.

MEET THE FOUNDERS

KIMBERLY SCHANZER | COFOUNDER

I’ve been in the beauty and skincare industry for over 13 years. But for most of my adult life, I was intimidated by makeup. As a young girl I would watch my mother put on makeup and think, I can’t wait to wear makeup and be pretty like her.

As I grew up I realized makeup wasn’t as simple as I thought. Which shades are right for me? How do I apply it? Am I not pretty without it? I was overwhelmed and intimidated, so I went the other way: I rejected it entirely.

That is, until I met Robert. He showed me how easy it is to highlight my natural features, create dramatic looks, or tailor my makeup to my mood or an event. I began to feel empowered by makeup rather than fearful, and I realized I am beautiful with or without it.

Makeup isn’t about being pretty. The beauty is already there — makeup is just an instrument to help us enhance our favorite features, boost confidence, or express our inner creativity. That’s what GirlBoyBeauty is about: empowering people to become their truest selves.

ROBERT GARCIA | COFOUNDER

I’ve always felt different growing up. One of my earliest memories is of admiring my grandmother’s elegant curls and eyeliner. I was never masculine enough to hang with the boys and never feminine enough to be a part of the girls, and I felt comfortable exploring both spectrums.

At the age of 9, I started to draw eyes on paper and use crayons as eyeshadow. At 14, I was doing makeup on myself. People assumed I wanted to be a woman, but the reality is I was just embracing the “feminine” aspects of my humanity.

Eventually I determined that I needed to live for me, not what society told me I should be. I consider myself a “boygirl,” and it’s in this fluid space that I’m able to express myself through makeup, enhance my features, and feel like my truest self.

That’s why we developed GirlBoyBeauty: to allow everyone a space to express their identity and feel like their truest selves, whatever that may look like. We want to scrap the stigma that tells us that makeup is only for a certain kind of person — because beauty is, and always has been, for everyone.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU.
